- What is your name? Karen Hudson
- How long have you worked or Red Door Cleaning for? Since I started the business in 2014.
- Why do you love cleaning? It makes me feel good to be able to help business owners complete tasks that they do not have time for. When things are clean, neat, and tidy, it allows me to feel a sense of calm and joy.
- If you’re not cleaning, what else are you doing with your time? Although I don’t clean regular buildings anymore, I am focusing on operating the business. Besides running the company, you will find me reading, listening to audio books (I am a huge nerd), researching business, cooking new recipes, and of course spending time with my husband, dogs, friends and family.
- Why do you love working for Red Door Cleaning? I LOVE my business. Working with other entrepreneurs and businesses is very fulfilling to me. I love being able to solve a problem for my clients. I also love working with my staff. Being able to teach them better, more efficient ways to clean is fun!
- What is one thing that surprised you when you started working for Red Door Cleaning? When I started Red Door Cleaning in 2014, I was blown away by how kind my clients are. I work with some of the most talented, smart, and incredible clients. They treat me and all of my 40 staff like we are part of their workforce. We really feel like a team.
- If you didn’t have to work, what would you do with your time? I would still want to somehow help other business owners in some way. I think most people would answer this question with “laying on a beach” but I truly get such joy being able to solve a problem for people.
- What was your first job ever? My first job ever was when I was 16 and I worked in an independently owned fitness facility. My job was to manage the desk, and your guessed it, CLEAN THE EQUIPMENT! I was very good at it in case you were wondering. LOL
- What’s the best advice you’ve ever heard? Do not give up. On anything. Any goal that you have set for yourself, you CAN achieve.
- What is the weirdest fact you know? Certain fears can be inherited through the generations. They did a study on mice where they released a certain smell and would then give the mice a small shock, which scared them. The grandchildren of those mice, who were never shocked showed major signs of distress and fear when they were exposed to the same smell. So, if you fear something in life, if might be because of your ancestors.
- If you could take a month to travel anywhere, where would you go? Tahiti! Bora Bora!
- Are you a cat person or a dog person? Is both an option? I own and love dogs more, but cats are also awesome. I love all animals.
- What is an interesting fact about yourself? The fact and I truly do love to clean. Most people find that weird.
- What is one non-work related goal that you would like to achieve in the next five years? Do more traveling. Most of my goals are work related, I am a bit of a workaholic.
- What is your most used emoji? 😂 I guess I laugh a lot LOL
Red Door Cleaning was recently tasked with providing floor stripping and waxing services for Belmead Dental Clinic in Edmonton. We have been providing these services for commercial properties and have a rigorous process to ensure your floor looks new.
We begin by sweeping, dust mopping, and vacuuming the targeted floors then apply a stripper solution which we let sit for a few minutes. Any leftover wax buildup is scrubbed by hand and disposed of. As the stripper solution has soaked your floor we then begin to use our electric floor scrubber to remove it. After this, we clean our floor with water and let it dry before we begin waxing. We begin spreading wax using a wax mop and let each layer of wax dry before applying the next one. Once completed we use a high-speed burnisher to buff your floors and create a beautiful shine.

What is the one thing that if you did it today would radically improve your commercial property’s ability to attract and retain the best tenants?
This is a question property managers spend a lot of time looking for answers to. But the truth is, there is no magical formula to instantaneously transform a commercial property into a magnet for businesses. Instead of one phenomenally successful tip, several small actions come together to make a commercial property irresistible to tenants.
Too often, however, property managers think they must invest all their energies on big things that cost a lot of money at the expense of small steps that they can take immediately. While your marketing, networking, and referral systems are important, they should not replace simple actions that impact the quality of the rental at a more basic level.
For instance, when was the last time you thought of using the cleanliness of your premises as a way to attract bigger and better-paying tenants? After you have spent hours polishing your company’s image and building innovative marketing programs, something as basic as how clean the building is can make or break your efforts.
From the viewpoint of the businesses that will rent or are renting your property, how clean the premises are weighs more than the promises you adverts make. Potential tenants often base their decisions to rent an office or commercial premises on how clean it is. They know that how neat a building is will affect their business’ performance.
How you approach cleaning in a commercial property:
- Defines the first impression the property makes on tenant’s employees and customers.
- Determines the caliber of businesses that are willing to rent space in your premises
- Impacts the productivity of your tenant’s staff.
- Helps customers feel comfortable and happy to spend time on the premises.
The sum of these benefits is the businesses on your premises make more money. If tenant’s businesses perform well, they will be less likely to leave and your property management business will be more profitable, as a result. Given how vital the cleanliness of your commercial property is to you and your tenants’ business, what is the best strategy for cleaning the building?
Should you clean it yourself or use amateur cleaners, as a way of saving costs? Or is it better to hire a professional cleaning company to handle all aspects of cleaning on the property? The best way to clean a commercial property is to let a professional cleaning company oversee the cleaning of the building. Why is this?
Reasons to hire a professional cleaner for your commercial property
The professional cleaner represents your tenant’s brand
The maintenance team in a commercial property doesn’t just represent you; they also represent the businesses that operate from the property. The quality of people you employ to work in the premises can attract or repel customers. Professional cleaning companies are very professional and will represent you and your tenants’ brands properly.
A professional cleaner maintains the highest standard of cleanliness
The people who work or do business in a building all have their different definitions of what cleanliness is. A professional cleaner will clean the premises beyond your tenants’ or their customers’ highest expectations. A professional cleaning company will implement the level of cleanliness usually seen in top restaurants and hotels.
Minimum interference with tenant’s business
Professional cleaners know how to clean the premises without getting in the way of your tenants, their staff, and customers. They will keep the entire premises spotlessly clean without interrupting the flow of business or disturbing anyone. This ensures a consistent level of cleanliness while enhancing the productivity of the businesses in the building.
They keep the premises sanitary
Because commercial buildings draw a lot of human traffic, it is easy for germs to spread in such buildings. A professional cleaning company has the skills and tools to keep all surfaces in the building sanitary. They will quickly and effectively disinfect railings, door handles, restrooms, and other areas of the building where pathogens tend to lurk.
Professional cleaners will save you money
Professional cleaners clean with speed without compromising quality. They can reduce wear and tear on the surfaces of the building. They know the best cleaning methods for all materials on the premises and will modify their approach, depending on what they are cleaning. This can slow the deterioration of the components of your building.
They let you focus on what is important
When you hire a professional cleaner, you don’t need to supervise them, as you would an amateur cleaner. A professional cleaner gives you the chance to spend time building your business rather than spending it mopping floors. By hiring a professional cleaner, you buy room to become more professional and profitable.
In summary, hiring a professional cleaning company helps you become a sought-after property manager because it lets you have the better of two worlds. You can give time to developing your core competencies while maintaining the highest standards in your commercial property.
Business owners in Edmonton and surrounding areas are opening their doors once again. However, as we welcome these changes, a re-entry to the workplace plan with a commitment to cleanliness is top of mind for many commercial space managers and business owners. Seeking professional cleaning companies with a commitment to clean that goes beyond the surface is a high priority like never before. With over a decade of proven commitment to a quality deep clean routine for a variety of commercial spaces, Red Door Cleaning is making the grade for many businesses in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Leduc.
1. Maintaining Healthy Environments
As employees are returning to their workspaces, in person meetings are increasing and businesses are seeing greater traffic, knowing that your staff and clients are doing business together in a healthy environment is important for many business owners. Cooler days are also around the corner meaning that regular disinfection is key – not just for keeping viruses like COVID-19 off high touch surfaces, but also for lowering the risk of spread of influenza and the common cold.
We know business owners and corporations have a standard of care to maintain. Your desire to keep your staff and your clients safe can be met by delegating that responsibility to the care of cleaning professionals. The peace of mind of having a routine deep cleaning schedule that meets the unique needs of your commercial space, means you have more time and energy to invest in building your business.
Utilizing a professional cleaning company is more than meeting a duty of care, it can also help your bottom line by ensuring your staff can continue to work at their peak, that the risk of spread of viruses and bacteria is significantly reduced. Thorough routine cleaning also reduces the spread of allergens and irritants that can reduce productivity in a time when it is critical to get your business up and running at its optimal capacity.
2. Creating Welcoming & Productive Spaces
Many businesses are striving to make a comeback and it is essential to make a good impression when you open your doors once again to your clients and customers. At Red Door Cleaning we pride ourselves at transforming drab and dreary commercial spaces into sparkling, well-kept and inviting places.
The visible demonstration of organization and care a client sees when walking into your office or commercial space is critical; it often translates into expectations of the quality service they will receive from your organization. This is also true of potential new hires wondering what type of work experience they can expect from an employer. Many businesses during the past several months have sat dormant collecting dust, undergone renovations, or are long overdue for floor stripping and waxing services. We invite you to browse our gallery of before and after images and see for yourself the difference our top quality professional cleaning service can make for you.
Let Red Door Cleaning open the door to get your business booming again. We can help you create an impressive, clean space to attract the right employees and keep the right clients coming through your doors again and again.
3. Confidence in a Perfect Clean
Professionalism and perfection are our hallmarks. Yes, we know – no one is perfect. Yet when it comes to cleaning, the attention to detail – not just of what is seen on the surface but what the eye can’t see – is one of the reasons Red Door has been trusted and relied upon for years. Many cleaning professionals aim for satisfactory. We go above and beyond this benchmark to provide the highest excellence in both cleaning and customer service.
Part of our standard of excellence is a commitment to continual industry improvement. When COVID-19 changed the game, we upped our game by switching to an even more powerful and effective disinfectant and providing a cleaning experience that helped many businesses meet new health standards. We also continue our commitment to using products that are extremely effective but also safer for people and the environment.
Our staff are experienced and trained in cleaning techniques that do not just smear and move germs and debris but properly remove or destroy them from your surfaces. We know the difference between cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting and care about what is both visible and invisible. At Red Door Cleaning our employees don’t just do their job, they live their passion. We are not satisfied with anything less than a perfect clean. We love that our top-notch professional standards mean your business can focus on opening your doors safely and stress-free by putting our passion for cleanliness to work for you.

Are your disinfectants actually working? Are you disinfecting your home, car, and office every day? Do you know if you are using the disinfectant properly to eliminate viruses?
In order for a disinfectant to kill certain viruses (AKA Covid-19), you cannot just spray it on and wipe it off right away within seconds. This is not how disinfecting works.
Why? Well, there is something called “Dwell Time”.
Dwell Time is the amount of time that a disinfectant must be in contact with the surface, and REMAIN WET, in order to achieve the product’s full benefit of killing off the virus. Your average dwell time (or as we like to call it, “kill time” to kill the virus) is 10 minutes. So, what does this mean exactly?
If you are using a disinfectant with your typical 10 minute dwell time, you have to spray the surface you are wanting to disinfect and leave it WET for 10 minutes before touching it. 10 minutes is a LONG time to stand there and wait! It is also a long time to ensure the surface did not dry on its own. If the surface dries by itself in under 10 minutes, it did not kill the virus and the harmful virus is still lurking!
What can you do about it?
The good news is, there are other alternatives to the 10 minutes. There are a lot of options for products that have shorter dwell times. Some of them are as short as thirty seconds, one minute, three minutes, and even five minutes. Of course, the shorter the amount of dwell time, usually the more expensive the product is. It can be difficult to find the dwell time, a lot of the times there is no information on the actual product itself. At Red Door Cleaning we have done our research and have called many many disinfecting companies that don’t have the information on their product. All of them were 10 minutes.
Products like Microban all have a 10 minute dwell time. So if you are using these products to kill the viruses out there, be sure to have your surface wet with the disinfectant for 10 minutes.
What does Red Door Cleaning use as a disinfectant?
We use a one minute kill time disinfectant, which is much easier than 10 minutes. It is approved by Health Canada and is on Health Canada’s list of hard-surface disinfectants with evidence against COVID-19. It is made by Diversey and it is called Oxivir.
Lysol wipes claim to be a 2 minute kill time, so that is another good alternative if you’re looking to use it in your home. Again, just make sure the surface remains wet for 2 minutes.
If you are looking for a shorter dwell time, I suggest calling your local janitorial store. Personally, we use Regent Supply in Edmonton and they are absolutely amazing and so helpful!
Meet Justine, she has been a dedicated part of our team since 2015. Justine has a background in Graphic Design. She came to Red Door Cleaning with a residential cleaning background, which was helpful to see details in her work. She first started out as a nightly cleaner and serviced one of our most detailed buildings 5 nights a week alongside the owner. There, she received detailed training on commercial cleaning, how to clean a commercial building, and what to look for. She is incredibly dedicated, knowledgeable, and all of our clients and staff love her. From there, she moved on to the Operations Manager role. Her main focus is quality control for all of our clients. Justine completes surprise quality control visits to each and every building we clean. She looks for discrepancies in our team’s work as well as completes a tool and supply check to ensure all of our tools are in working order. It is important that our employees have working tools to be able to complete their job properly. Justine also does all the hands on training of any new employee that gets hired on with Red Door Cleaning and manages all of the supplies for our clients and staff. Justine’s job is sort of in the background and sometimes can go unnoticed. But, we at Red Door Cleaning appreciate Justine and all her hard work she has done for us. We certainly wouldn’t be here today without her help and dedication to the company. If you see Justine in your building that we clean, be sure to say hello!
Cleaning a medical clinic is not the same as cleaning any other commercial business. The standards and stakes are higher when it comes to ensuring medical clinics are properly clean. There are so many important things that go on in medical clinics and ensuring everything is clean and sanitized should be a top priority. Hiring a professional medical clinic cleaning company like Red Door Cleaning can ensure the clinic is clean and sanitized. Having a clean medical clinic shows patients that you are serious about their health and there are many things to ensure your clinic looks clean.
Whenever you are dealing with patients or equipment you should always wear gloves. Disposable gloves are the best to use as you can dispose of them which will help prevent the spread of germs in the medical clinic.
Levels of Cleanliness
Different areas in your medical clinic may not require the same attention or level of cleaning as other areas. Patient rooms will probably require more attention and a higher level of cleaning than an administrative office that is not used by patients. Treatment rooms are not the only place that should receive extra attention. Patient waiting rooms should be cleaned regularly as they can attract germs from patients waiting to see their doctor as well as ensuring restrooms remain clean as well.
Wash Your Hands
Everyone should be washing their hand with soap regularly and patients who visit the medical clinic should be encouraged to do the same. Having hand sanitizing stations available in the medical clinic can also help prevent the spread of germs.
Using the Right Cleaning Products
Red Door Cleaning has years of experience cleaning medical clinics in Edmonton and during our time we only use the best cleaning products that are also environmentally conscious. We know what cleaning products should be used and which ones should be avoided
Use a Checklist
For all our clients Red Door Cleaning can come up with a custom cleaning plan when we go in and clean. But during the day when the clinic is in use it will most likely be the staff who are responsible for ensuring certain areas of the clinic are clean. The staff at the clinic should check off a list of their assigned cleaning tasks they are responsible for during the day. This can also help Red Door Cleaning when we go in and clean and sanitize the entire medical clinic.
Contact Red Door Cleaning
The staff working in a medical clinic have a lot of responsibilities and each task requires their undivided attention with the utmost care. Due to these responsibilities cleaning might take a back seat because there are tasks that require immediate attention from the clinic staff. Hiring a professional and reliable medical clinic cleaning company like Red Door Cleaning means you won’t have to worry about the equipment or expertise to clean a medical clinic. Having a clean medical clinic keeps both employees and patients happy.

Keeping your office as clean as possible especially during a global pandemic is essential for the health and safety of the people in the office. Keeping high contact surfaces clean and disinfected is crucial as contracting pathogens like COVID-19 can be as easy as touching a n infected surface. Routinely making s
COVID-19 can survive longer on surfaces and this is especially bad for high contact surfaces. You can acquire the virus through physical contact, and it spreads further from person to person via droplets. In an office we use our hands everyday to complete our tasks. Our hands are the most accessible part of contact which is why it is important to keep a tidy office space and to ensure you are washing or sanitizing your hands. The best way to keep safe of the virus is to keep yourself and your workspace clean.
When hiring a commercial cleaning company, they may use the terms “cleaning” or “sanitizing” and you may think they mean the same thing since they are used interchangeably. The reality is cleaning, and sanitizing go hand in hand but there is also a difference between the two. Hiring a commercial cleaning company like Red Door Cleaning which provides both cleaning and sanitization is ideal in keeping your office clean and sanitized during the Coronavirus pandemic.
For some commercial cleaning companies, the word cleaning means to make things clear of anything dirty, but this does not mean that they will also sanitize those dirty areas. Cleaning includes tidying up objects or debris that can make a place messy. In an office setting this could mean cleaning up clutter and dust off a desk to clear up any loose items to make it clear again.
Sanitizing does incorporate the same actions as cleaning about getting rid of impurities on a surface, but it is important to know the differences. Consider sanitizing as deep cleaning of a surface using disinfectant products. When sanitizing the endgame is to make objects, surfaces, and areas around your office free from pathogens as possible whereas with cleaning the focus is on getting rid of dirt or impurities that are visible on the surface. Sanitizing your office mean keeping it virus free by killing off microorganisms that will affect your health.

Building operators or managers understand that office cleaning can influence the individuals who work there during office hours. Therefore, some will opt for nightly office cleaning, but which is the better choice?
Day Office Cleaning Benefits
Day office cleaning comes with its own benefits including energy savings, workers efficiency, improves response time, and enhanced security during the night.
Increased Workers Efficiency
Offices will include washrooms, workplaces, and other high touchpoints where employees and clients will use throughout the day. Washrooms will most likely start the day clean but become dirty as the day goes by. The benefit with day office cleaning is dust and dirt get cleaned right away. Cleaner workplaces to have an effect on the employees and those who work in buildings with day cleaners find it more pleasant and work more efficiently in cleaner environments.
Better Response Time
As mentioned before places like washrooms, workplaces, and high touch point areas will get dirty during the day. Having day cleaners ensure that these high traffic areas are kept clean throughout the day. If you have ever experienced an employee spill their coffee on the carpet or deal with a malfunctioning air conditioning unit causing flooding in the conference room then the benefit with having day cleaners is you can have the spot cleaned fairly quickly. Also, garbage cans will be regularly emptied out throughout the day.
Night Office Cleaning Benefits
Day office cleaning has become popular among building operators and managers but many still opt for nightly office cleaning as it works better for them.
Cleaning equipment can be loud and make noise when used which can be distracting and cause problems for employees trying to focus on their work. Cleaning equipment like vacuums which are loud when in use can raise complaints from employees during office hours. There are other situations where your employees could be focused on a certain task and a cleaner enters the office and starts wiping things down and moving items while creating noise in the process. With night office cleaning disruptions like this are entirely avoided and your employees can be focused on their work. Cleaning things like carpets, upholstery maintenance, vacuum cleaning, washrooms, kitchens are best done when there is no one in the building.
Possible disruption does not only happen to employees with cleaners around it can also go the other way. While walking through the hallway of your building you may have come across a cleaner mopping the floor. There is no other way for you to get to your destination so you have to walk over the newly mopped floor leaving footsteps behind and in some cases making the cleaner clean that part of the floor again. You want your employees to enjoy a clean office, but you do not want them tripping over the cleaning personnel either. With nightly office cleaning, cleaners can work more efficiently and not have to worry about disruptions from others. Cleaning surfaces and mopping high traffic areas can be done faster with no disruptions.
Health & Safety
Cleaning crews will have the necessary protection for all scenarios whereas office employees will not. When cleaning in higher places such as ceiling fans or light fixtures the cleaners will be wearing the proper gear necessary for the task in case something was to fall. Office employees in the near vicinity will not and could be put at risk and nighttime cleaning saves them from that risk. Also, cleaners will be wearing gloves and safety goggles while they work while your employees will not. You will never have to worry about this with nightly office cleaning as your employees will not be affected by the cleaning. Nearly 20 million people are allergic to dust mites so someone in your building might not appreciate daytime dusting due to health issues. Consider nightly office cleaning for better health and safety.
